Trace element behaviour at cold seeps and the potential export of dissolved iron to the ocean ArchiMer
Lemaitre, Nolwenn; Bayon, Germain; Ondreas, Helene; Caprais, Jean-claude; Freslon, Nicolas; Bollinger, Claire; Rouget, Marie-laure; De Prunele, Alexis; Ruffine, Livio; Olu-le Roy, Karine; Sarthou, Geraldine.
Seawater samples were collected by submersible above methane seeps in the Gulf of Guinea (Regab and Baboon pockmarks) in order to investigate the behaviour of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and rare earth elements (REE) during fluid seepage. Our aim was to determine whether cold seeps may represent potential sources of dissolved chemical species to the ocean. Dissolved (<0.45 μm filtered samples) and total dissolvable (unfiltered samples) concentrations were determined over ∼50 m long vertical transects above the seafloor and at various discrete locations within the pockmarks. We show that substantial amounts of Fe and Mn are released into seawater during seepage of methane-rich fluids. Mn is exported almost quantitatively in the dissolved form (more than...

Trace metals assessment in water, sediment, mussel and seagrass species - Validation of the use of Posidonia oceanica as a metal biomonitor ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline; Pergent, G; Kantin, Roger; Pergent Martini, C; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. Furthermore, for the first time, metal concentrations found in P. oceanica have been compared with those found in the water column, in the sediment and in the...

TRANSMER, un modèle hydrodynamique rapide et précis pour la simulation à moyen et long terme des transferts de radionucléides en Manche et dans le sud de la Mer du Nord ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck.
TRANSMER hydrodynamic model simulates dispersion of dissolved substances in seawater at the scale of the English Channel and the south of the North Sea with a mesh size of one kilometre and a time step of 30 minutes. It has been qualitatively and quantitatively validated by 1400 measurement of 125Sb in seawater. This model evaluates the medium- and long-term consequences of releases of soluble pollutants in the marine ecosystem under normal or accidental conditions, at a very low computation cost (it takes less than one hour to simulate one year).

Use of rotavirus virus-like particles as surrogates to evaluate virus persistence in shellfish ArchiMer
Loisy, Fabienne; Atmar, R; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Cohen, J; Caprais, Marie-paule; Pommepuy, Monique; Le Guyader, Soizick.
Rotavirus virus-like particles (VLPs) and MS2 bacteriophages were bioaccumulated in bivalve mollusks to evaluate viral persistence in shellfish during depuration and relaying under natural conditions. Using this nonpathogenic surrogate virus, we were able to demonstrate that about 1 log(10) of VLPs was depurated after 1 week in warm seawater (22 degrees C). Phage MS2 was depurated more rapidly (about 2 log(10) in 1 week) than were VLPs, as determined using a single-compartment model and linear regression analysis. After being relayed in the estuary under the influence of the tides, VLPs were detected in oysters for up to 82 days following seeding with high levels of VLPs (concentration range between 10(10) and 10(9) particles per g of pancreatic tissue)...
